Mazar Sharif: A vibrant display of agility and skill took center stage in Mazar Sharif as 30 young athletes participated in a parkour exhibition.
The Balkh Provincial Federation of Sports organized the event in collaboration with the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports.
The one day event, held in a public sports facility in the heart of the city, attracted a large crowd of spectators, including local youth, sports enthusiasts, and community leaders.
Athletes performed high energy stunts, acrobatics, and complex sequences, demonstrating both physical strength and technical precision.
“This event is about more than just performing tricks,” said Ahmadullah Farahmand, a coach and trainer involved in the exhibition. “It is about inspiring our youth to pursue healthy activities, develop confidence, and challenge themselves safely.”
Observers noted the increasing popularity of parkour among young Afghans. Dr. Sediq Rahimi, a sports development expert, commented: “Parkour is particularly suited to urban areas in Afghanistan. It requires minimal equipment, promotes body control, and encourages problem-solving under pressure. Events like this help identify talent and create pathways for structured training.”
The exhibition concluded with athletes receiving recognition for their performances. Organizers emphasized that the aim was to provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and motivate others to engage in active lifestyles.
Parkour, also known as free running, is a discipline that involves moving through environments creatively using running, jumping, and climbing techniques.
In Afghanistan, the sport has gained traction in recent years, particularly in urban centers, as young people seek safe, energetic ways to stay physically active.
The Balkh Federation has actively supported such initiatives, combining technical training with community engagement to foster youth development through sports.
The event reflects broader efforts in Afghanistan to diversify sports programs and introduce non-traditional athletic disciplines alongside established sports such as football, martial arts, and athletics.
