Afghanistan enters the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with heightened expectations after a landmark semi-final appearance in 2024, and the newly released fixture list underscores several pivotal matches that could shape the team’s campaign in India and Sri Lanka.
The standout contest is the February 11 clash against South Africa in Ahmedabad, a rematch of the 2024 semi-final. Afghanistan’s spin-heavy attack, led by captain Rashid Khan and supported by Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi, is expected to thrive in Indian conditions. The squad’s batting depth has improved with the emergence of Sediqullah Atal, complementing established openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran.
Other fixtures, though not involving Afghanistan directly, will influence the team’s qualification pathway. The India–Pakistan match on February 15 in Colombo is expected to set the early tone in the group stage, potentially affecting net run rate scenarios. England’s meeting with the West Indies in Mumbai, and Australia’s match against hosts Sri Lanka in Kandy, are also closely watched by Afghan analysts, given their impact on seeding and crossover opponents.
Afghan supporters will keep an eye on Italy vs Nepal on February 12 in Mumbai, a contest featuring two emerging sides. Nepal, a frequent regional rival with an expanding supporter base, poses potential challenges in later phases of the competition.
Team officials say Afghanistan enters the tournament with a balanced squad, improved fitness standards and greater experience from participation in global leagues, including the IPL, BBL, PSL and Hundred.
The 2026 edition marks the 10th ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the second to feature 20 teams. Afghanistan has steadily grown into a major force in the T20 format, highlighted by its first semi-final berth in 2024 and consistent wins over higher-ranked sides. The 2026 campaign offers another opportunity to strengthen the team’s global standing, with spin depth and youthful batting forming the core of Afghanistan’s ambitions.
