A nine-member climbing team successfully reached the highest point of the Alka mountain range after completing a 1,300-meter ascent from the Nahreshahi district, in an expedition organised with the support of the Balkh Directorate of Physical Education and Sports.
According to officials, the climb aimed to strengthen the physical endurance and outdoor readiness of local athletes. The group navigated steep and uneven terrain before reaching the summit, completing the route safely and without incident. Organisers said such practical exercises help athletes develop stamina, coordination and discipline in natural conditions.
The Balkh sports department noted increasing interest among young athletes in mountaineering and outdoor fitness activities across the province.
Mountaineering initiatives in northern Afghanistan have grown in recent years, with local authorities encouraging low-cost outdoor sports to improve community health and youth engagement. The Alka Mountains, known for their accessible yet demanding trails, have become a popular training site for beginner and intermediate climbers.
