The Afghan ski documentary “Champions of the Golden Valley” has been featured on Olympics.com, marking a significant international achievement for Afghanistan’s sports community and filmmakers.
The documentary tells the story of Afghan skier Alishah Farhang and the emergence of a grassroots skiing movement in Bamyan, highlighting how sport became a source of unity, resilience, and hope in a challenging environment. Farhang’s efforts to establish local ski competitions played a central role in developing winter sports at the community level.
Filmed largely in Afghanistan before 2021 and completed with narration recorded in Germany, where Farhang now lives with his family, the film reflects both the past and present realities of Afghan athletes. Despite forced separation from the programme he helped build, the story underscores the lasting impact of his work and the determination of Bamyan’s young skiers.
“Champions of the Golden Valley” has been screened at more than 60 international film festivals and has received over 40 jury and audience awards. Its inclusion on Olympics.com represents a notable recognition of Afghan sport on one of the world’s most prominent Olympic media platforms.
