Lionel Messi has spoken openly about the constant scrutiny athletes face on social media, saying that even the smallest actions online are often turned into major talking points.
“Nowadays, every little thing becomes a big issue,” Messi said. “Whether you follow someone or not, like something or don’t, everything is examined.”
The Argentina captain explained that this environment sometimes affects how he behaves online. “Sometimes I feel like unfollowing someone, but then I think that if I do, it will turn into a whole story,” he said, adding that such considerations make him cautious in his digital interactions.
Messi noted that while he tries to be careful on social media, he does not apply the same restraint to other aspects of his life. “If I did that with everything, I’d go crazy,” he said. “You can’t live by overthinking every small thing you do.”
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also stressed his preference for keeping the focus on football. “I don’t like news about me or people talking about me unless it’s related to football,” Messi said.
His comments reflect the broader challenges faced by high-profile athletes navigating public life in the age of constant online attention.
