Afghanistan’s national football team delivered a remarkable 0-0 draw against Pakistan on Thursday, 9th October, 2025, despite facing extraordinary logistical and physical challenges. In a detailed post-match press conference, both Vincenzo Alberto Annese head coach, and captain Sharif Mohammad outlined the struggles and resilience behind the team’s performance.
The Afghan squad endured one of the most challenging journeys in recent history. According to Captain Sharif Mohammad: “The Day before the game, we were in Dubai. We came from Yakutia, and we got our visas on the day of the game. It was one of the most difficult games for the boys.” Sharif added further that there was no energy, but they gave their all.”
“Many players and staff traveled overnight from Kabul; some went straight from the airport to the stadium,” said Afghanistan head coach Alberto. According to him, in such a situation, boys still played 90 minutes. “It’s a kind of miracle to perform under these conditions.”
The team arrived in Pakistan on the morning of the match, with virtually no rest or warm-up time. Some players were still fatigued from travel and visa delays, yet they managed to complete the match.
Afghanistan dominated possession, stretching the Pakistani defense and creating attacking opportunities. The coach noted: “We had some dangerous actions with Sharif and Sanfros inside the box. We need more combinations and direct play toward the goal.”
Fatigue became evident. Pakistan dominated possession, launched multiple attacks, and made three substitutions, including foreign-based players. Tactical adjustments, including changing the captain, helped Afghanistan stay organized. The coach said, “We faced important attacks, but the players stayed focused until the final whistle.”
The coach and captain repeatedly emphasized the team’s resilience: “Our players survived traveling overnight and played straight away. That’s dedication,” said the coach. “Every player fought for every ball. We stayed positive and never gave up,” said Sharif.
Despite the fatigue, the players showed tactical discipline, mental strength, and teamwork, keeping Pakistan at bay and securing a historic point.
The Afghan coaching staff noted that Pakistan had prepared extensively, starting training from late September, and included foreign-based players. The coach said, “Pakistan’s team was fresher, with a good vision and attacking mindset. Yet our team managed to hold them to a draw, which is a huge achievement under these conditions.”
When asked about social media criticism, the coach commented, “I don’t watch social media much. Professional career comes first. Focus is on the team, the players, and the game.”
The team received encouragement from fans in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.“Seeing supporters cheer for Afghanistan, even here in Pakistan, gave our players energy,” the coach said.
Looking ahead, the Afghan team is focusing on preparation and recovery before their next fixture in Kuwait. The coach stated, “This time, we will have more days with the team, more sleep, and less travel. We aim to reach full strength and target three points.”
Sharif Mohammad added, “I will try to get good results in Kuwait. We will give our best and continue our fight.”
Officials and players highlighted that additional key players will join the squad, allowing the team to operate at full capacity for upcoming international matches.
Afghanistan has long faced logistical challenges, visa issues, and limited training opportunities in regional football competitions. Despite this, the team has shown resilience, tactical awareness, and mental fortitude, consistently performing under pressure. The draw against Pakistan represents a milestone in perseverance and teamwork, proving that Afghan football can compete at a high level, even under extreme conditions.
The Afghanistan national football team demonstrated that unity, determination, and focus can overcome physical and logistical obstacles. The 0-0 draw is not just a result on the scoreboard; it is a testament to the players’ spirit, endurance, and commitment, inspiring confidence for future matches and elevating the team’s international profile.
