15 August 2025- Kabul, Afghanistan: The Afghanistan Sports Journalists Federation (ASJF) will hold its 5th Congress virtually on 16 August 2025, in what is being described as one of the most important milestones in the Federation’s 11-year history.
This Congress will serve as a platform for unity, reform, and strategic direction, gathering more than 117 sports journalists from 25 provinces and the Afghan diaspora to decide the future leadership and structure of ASJF.
The event will be held under the guidance and monitoring of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), with President Mr. Gianni Merlo and Secretary General Mr. Jura Ozmec joining the session live. Also in attendance will be representatives from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).
Key decisions during the Congress will include the introduction of an International Board for exiled Afghan journalists, structural reforms to ensure inclusivity and accountability, and the formal adoption of statute amendments aligning ASJF even more closely with AIPS principles and international journalism standards.
ASJF Founder and President Khoshhal Taib emphasized the Congress’s significance:“This is not just an election, it is a roadmap for the future of Afghan sports journalism. We are building a Federation that respects both Afghan law and international media ethics, a Federation that will be inclusive, transparent, and internationally connected.”
The Congress also reflects ASJF’s resilience in the face of challenges, reaffirming its position as the only legitimate and recognized national body representing Afghan sports journalists worldwide.
Results and new leadership announcements will follow at the close of the Congress on 16 August.
