KABUL, May 31, 2019 – Afghanistan Sport Journalists’ Federation celebrated the great achievements of IOC Member in Afghanistan, Samira Asghari.

The event took place at the Kabul Star hotel with participants from the Afghanistan National Olympic committee, National Federation athletes and sport journalists on 30th May.

Khoshal Taib, First Vice President of Afghanistan Sport Journalists’ Federation welcomed guests and congratulated Samira Asghari for her great achievements. Adding that ASJF is fully committed to celebrating and recognising the achievements of all Afghan athletes and journalists.

Taib added further that ASJF aims for true sport journalism, from raising the voice of Afghan athletes working around the country to capacity building of journalists via organizing workshops and training.

IOC President Thomas Bach, in his written message for the first time in the history of Afghanistan, added his heartfelt congratulations to Samira Asghari on this important occasion.

Mr. Bach added further: ‘By honoring Samira Asghari with the Sport Personality of the Year award, you are also sending a powerful message to all sport loving people in your country, in particular, of course, to girls and women.’

In his message the IOC president communicated that as a pioneer in so many ways, Samira Asghari stands out for her dedication to promote and empower women in and through sport in Afghanistan. Her passion for sport and its values shines through in everything she does. As the first Afghan IOC Member and one of the youngest IOC Members in IOC history, she is a role model for girls and women in Afghanistan and beyond.

IOC President Mr. Thomas Bach on behalf of the International Olympic Committee, also thanked the Afghanistan Sports Journalists’ Federation for this important recognition and celebration of Samira Asghari.

Mr. Gianni Merlo, President of AIPS expressed his congratulations to ASJF Members and Samira Asghari for this important occasion and thanked ASJF for its exemplary bsp; work in Afghanistan.

He added in his video message that Samira is a strong woman and we are with her all the way as she plays her role in the betterment of the world through sport.

IOC Member Samira Asghari thanked the Afghanistan Sport Journalists Federation for recognizing her achievements and work, promising to work hard and bring pride to the nation and world.

Afghanistan sport Journalists’ Federation also announced submission for AIPS Sport Media awards and full commitment to support Afghan journalists competing this year.
