A one-day buzkashi competition with the participation of 60 chapandaz was staged in the northern city of Mazar-e Sharif, officials said on Tuesday. The event was organized by the local representation of the Buzkashi Federation in coordination with the Balkh provincial sports directorate and took place at the Haji Maqim Bai buzkashi field.
At the end of the contest, match officials announced two “akher-e-alaq” winners, with Pahlawan Mustafa claiming the first title and Pahlawan Nusrat securing the second. Both riders successfully carried the buz (goat carcass) to the halal circle on horses owned by Naqib Gada, earning victory in their respective rounds.
Buzkashi, Afghanistan’s historic equestrian sport, remains central to cultural and sporting life in northern provinces such as Balkh. Local tournaments provide a platform for riders to showcase traditional riding skills and help preserve a sport considered one of the country’s most enduring symbols of identity.
