Domestic leagues and national championships played a critical role in keeping Afghan athletes active in 2025, as international sporting opportunities remained limited, according to Molvi Ahmadullah Wasiq.
Wasiq said structured competitions in football, volleyball, badminton, and several other sports continued across the country, ensuring regular match exposure for athletes despite restrictions on overseas participation.
He highlighted the National Buzkashi 7th Edition as a notable recent tournament, where foreign athletes competed alongside Afghan players. The competition concluded with Sar-e-Put claiming the championship title.
Speaking in an interview with a local television channel, Wasiq said the participation of international players demonstrated Afghanistan’s readiness to host foreign athletes alongside domestic competitions.
Afghanistan Sports Journalists Federation (ASJF) President Khushhal Taib said domestic leagues have served as a stabilising force during periods of sporting isolation.
Taib added that consistent local competition is essential for maintaining player development, coaching standards, and overall sporting continuity in the country.
