Nangarhar authorities have launched a sharper, more structured approach to youth development through sports, hosting a 90-athlete boxing tournament in Jalalabad’s Fifth District. Officials said the goal was not only competition but rebuilding discipline, physical readiness and a sustainable talent pipeline for eastern Afghanistan.

The event, organized by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports in coordination with the local Boxing Federation, brought together newcomers, youth and senior-level boxers. Over 45 athletes claimed victories, but organizers emphasized that the real focus was identifying promising fighters who can be shaped for higher-level competition.

Sports officials in Nangarhar said the province has seen rising interest in combat sports at a time when economic and social pressures are pulling many young men away from structured physical training. Boxing, they argue, is becoming a tool to redirect energy, build resilience, and re-establish organized sporting pathways that disappeared in recent years.

The competition also served as an informal scouting platform for coaches seeking disciplined young athletes with potential for future national representation. Trainers noted that several fighters displayed “unexpected technical maturity,” prompting discussions about forming a more consistent provincial boxing program.

Nangarhar has long been a stronghold of martial sports, but instability and lack of facilities weakened athlete development systems. Recent efforts to revive organized training aim to rebuild a generation of disciplined competitors and prevent young talent from drifting into unstructured or risky environments. The latest tournament signals a step toward restoring that foundation and repositioning eastern Afghanistan as a center for emerging combat-sport talent.
