Three day traditional Spear Throwing competition brings together 60 athletes to fight polio and select provincial talents.

A three day traditional spear throwing tournament concluded in Qalat, Zabul province, with the dual purpose of raising awareness about polio and selecting the best athletes for the provincial spear throwing team.
More than 60 spear throwers from five districts took part in the event, organized by the Zabul Spear Throwing Federation in cooperation with the Polio Eradication Program.

The competition attracted thousands of spectators, highlighting the province’s strong sporting culture and passion for traditional games. Over three days, athletes from six districts showcased their strength and skill in one of Afghanistan’s oldest sports.

According to organizers, the tournament not only preserved the cultural heritage of spear throwing but also served as a vital platform to spread public health messages, particularly in support of Afghanistan’s ongoing efforts to eradicate polio.

Spear throwing is a deeply rooted traditional sport in southern Afghanistan, often celebrated in festivals and cultural gatherings. In recent years, such tournaments have been increasingly used to promote social causes and public health awareness, blending cultural pride with community development.
