New Zealand secured its first victory of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 after holding off a spirited Ireland challenge to win by four runs at the Hampshire Bowl.

Ireland appeared on course for a historic victory thanks to a superb 110-run partnership between Orla Prendergast and captain Gaby Lewis. Prendergast scored 59 runs, while Lewis added 58 as Ireland chased a target of 141.

However, New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr turned the match in her side’s favor with two crucial wickets in the 18th over, removing Prendergast and Rebecca Stokell to halt Ireland’s momentum.

With 15 runs required from the final over, veteran Suzie Bates kept her composure and successfully defended the target to secure New Zealand’s first win of the tournament.

Earlier, Ireland’s bowlers made an impressive start after electing to field. Prendergast and Cara Murray each claimed two wickets as New Zealand struggled early before recovering to post 140 for six.

Brooke Halliday scored 34 and Izzy Sharp added 36 to help the defending champions reach a competitive total.

Despite falling short, Ireland produced one of its strongest World Cup performances, pushing the reigning champions to the limit.

New Zealand entered the tournament as defending champions and fourth in the ICC rankings, while Ireland arrived ranked ninth. The result gives New Zealand its first win of the competition, while Ireland narrowly missed out on what would have been a landmark World Cup victory.
