Former India captain and chief selector Kris Srikkanth has challenged India’s selection strategy for this month’s three-match T20 international series against Afghanistan, arguing that the fixtures should have been used to test more emerging players.
Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel that India’s experienced squad appeared to reflect caution after consecutive series defeats against Ireland and England. His comments were reported on Friday, September 4, by The Times of India and the ANI news agency.
He described the approach as a “desperation move” and said a series in familiar home conditions could instead have offered selectors a longer look at players outside India’s established group.
The criticism does not alter the squad or the series arrangements. India have named Shreyas Iyer as captain and Tilak Varma as vice-captain, with Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh among the experienced selections.
Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana remain subject to fitness clearance. Srikkanth questioned whether medical testing alone was enough, arguing that players returning from injury should also demonstrate readiness in competitive matches.
India’s selectors had not publicly responded to his comments at the time of publication.
Afghanistan will be the designated host for the series, with all three matches scheduled at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on September 13, 15 and 17. The International Cricket Council has described it as the teams’ first bilateral T20I series since January 2024.
Srikkanth’s intervention shifts attention from the names selected to India’s wider planning: whether the series should prioritise immediate results or provide opportunities to less experienced players against a strong Afghanistan side.
