Australia has included Marnus Labuschagne in its squad for a three-Test ICC World Test Championship series in South Africa, despite the former world No. 1’s prolonged struggle for runs.
The series begins in Durban on October 9. Reserve batter Josh Inglis and young all-rounder Cooper Connolly were also selected, giving Australia alternatives if Labuschagne does not secure a place in the first Test XI.
Chair of Selectors George Bailey acknowledged that Australia wants more runs from the 32-year-old but said the panel remains confident he can make a positive contribution.
Labuschagne has not scored a Test century since July 2023. He managed 36 runs across three innings during Australia’s recent two-Test home series against Bangladesh.
Bailey said Labuschagne’s omission from the preceding one-day international series in South Africa would allow him to concentrate fully on red-ball preparation.
