A group-stage kabaddi tournament involving teams from eight Helmand districts has begun at Nazari Sports Club in Lashkar Gah.

The Helmand Physical Education and Sports Directorate organised the competition through its traditional sports programme under the name of the Nazari Cup.

Helmand sports director Mohammad Ismail Zahid attended the opening ceremony. He encouraged young people to participate in sport and praised Ustad Nazari’s achievements and sporting programmes.

Gereshk faced Musa Qala in the tournament’s opening match.

The Gereshk district team defeated Musa Qala by a margin of six points to record the competition’s first victory.

Organisers said the tournament was launched to support the development of traditional sports and encourage more young people to participate in them.

The group-stage competition is scheduled to continue for three weeks. A complete list of participating districts and fixtures was not included in the official report.
