The International Cricket Council said Pakistan were found to be 11 overs short of the required rate after time allowances were taken into account.
Match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the sanction under the ICC’s minimum over-rate rules. The regulations provide for a match-fee fine for each over a team fails to bowl within the allotted time, subject to a maximum fine of 50 per cent.
The World Test Championship playing conditions also impose a one-point deduction for each over a team is short. Pakistan therefore lost 11 WTC points.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam accepted the offence and proposed sanction, meaning a formal hearing was not required.
On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren levelled the charge, according to the ICC media release.
The points deduction could prove more consequential than the financial penalty because World Test Championship qualification is determined by teams’ championship results across the cycle.
