Bangladesh have recalled Towhid Hridoy for next month’s one-off Test against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates after the batter scored a record 350 for Bangladesh A earlier this month.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board named a 15-player squad for the Test, which will be played from October 9 to 13. Najmul Hossain Shanto will captain the side.
Hridoy’s return follows his unbeaten 350 against South Africa A in Potchefstroom on September 2. The innings surpassed Tamim Iqbal’s 334 as the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi batter in first-class cricket.
The 24-year-old had made his Test debut against Zimbabwe earlier this year before losing his place in the side.
Bangladesh have retained an experienced batting core for the Afghanistan match, with Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque and Litton Das included alongside Shanto. Jaker Ali Anik has also returned to the squad.
The pace attack consists of Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury and Shoriful Islam, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam are the main spin options.
Taskin Ahmed is not in the squad. Bangladesh selectors said he was being rested with the team’s forthcoming World Test Championship commitments in mind. Nayeem Hasan, Musfik Hasan and Iqbal Hossain Emon will travel as reserves.
Bangladesh squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (captain), Tanzid Hasan, Shadman Islam, Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das, Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali Anik, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury and Shoriful Islam.
The Afghanistan-Bangladesh Test will open Afghanistan’s October and November programme in the UAE. Afghanistan are then scheduled to play Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in an ODI tri-series beginning on October 17.
