Afghanistan’s Emal Hamdam made a winning start to his Asian Games campaign on Wednesday, defeating Qatar’s Mohamed Alfagay by unanimous decision in the men’s 60kg boxing competition in Japan.
Hamdam won the Round of 32 contest 5–0 at Nishio Gymnasium, with all five judges awarding him the victory. The result sends him into the next round of the competition.
World Boxing confirmed the result in its September 23 report on the third day of boxing at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. The Afghanistan National Boxing Federation also announced the victory, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.
For Hamdam, the Games mark an opportunity to compete for Afghanistan after previously boxing in Germany.
Afghanistan International reports that the 18-year-old represented Germany at different levels before choosing to compete for Afghanistan in senior international boxing.
According to the broadcaster, Hamdam’s earlier achievements include nine German national titles, a European championship bronze medal and a world championship runner-up finish. Those career details have not been independently confirmed by ASJF NEWS.
His opening victory gives Afghanistan a boxer in the next stage of the men’s 60kg competition.
Hamdam is part of Afghanistan’s three-member boxing delegation at the Games. His victory follows the opening-round elimination of compatriot Mohammad Ibrahim Frotan, who lost a 4–1 split decision to South Korea’s Kim Joonsu in the men’s 70kg division on September 21.
Hamdam’s next opponent and bout time have not yet been confirmed in the sources reviewed for this report.
