Afghanistan Beat Japan by 48 Runs in Asian Games Cricket Opener

NISSHIN, JAPAN — Afghanistan began their Asian Games men’s cricket campaign with a 48-run victory over hosts Japan in Nisshin. A disciplined defence of 129 for six restricted Japan to 81 and gave the Afghan side an important opening advantage in Group A.

Afghanistan will field a 15-member squad led by Darwish Rasooli in the men's cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.

Afghanistan did not produce an imposing total after being asked to set the target, but 129 proved comfortably beyond Japan once the chase came under sustained pressure.

The hosts were dismissed for 81 in 19.3 overs, leaving Afghanistan with a clear winning margin and two points from their first match of the tournament.

The result matters beyond the opening scoreboard. Afghanistan are competing in Group A alongside Japan and Nepal, with only two teams advancing to the quarter-finals.

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were given direct places in the knockout stage. Afghanistan must therefore negotiate the preliminary round before they can challenge the seeded teams for a medal.

That makes the controlled nature of Thursday’s win especially useful. Afghanistan protected a modest total, avoided an early upset against the hosts and strengthened their net run rate before the remaining group fixture.

The Asian Games tournament is being played in the Twenty20 format. Afghanistan entered the competition with a development-oriented squad rather than the full senior side, placing greater responsibility on emerging players in a high-pressure multi-sport event.

The team won silver at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou. This campaign now begins with a result that keeps another medal run firmly within reach, although stronger opposition awaits if Afghanistan advance.
