KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — A one-day kung fu championship involving 160 athletes from sports clubs across Kabul began on Wednesday, September 16, with competitors taking part in the Unity and Solidarity Cup.

The tournament was organised by Afghanistan’s National Kung Fu Federation in cooperation with Kabul’s Physical Education and Sports Directorate.

Athletes are competing in the Bazmayana style through individual fights across four age categories: children, adolescents, youth and adults.

Organisers said 80 leading athletes are expected to be identified at the conclusion of the competition.

The opening ceremony was attended by Hafiz Ahmad Jan Zadran, technical and professional deputy of Afghanistan’s sports authority, alongside officials from the National Kung Fu Federation and participating athletes.

Beyond the results, the competition provides Kabul-based athletes with an opportunity to gain competitive experience and gives officials a chance to identify emerging talent across different age groups.

The tournament is part of ongoing domestic kung fu activity in Afghanistan, where provincial and national-level competitions are being used to provide athletes with more opportunities for organised competition.
