Afghan weightlifter Sayed Murad is set to compete at the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo, China, as athletes begin their qualification campaigns for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

According to an Afghan sports report issued on Tuesday, 27 October, Murad will represent the Afghanistan Weightlifting Federation, accompanied by national team coach Abdullah Dost.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has scheduled the championships from 27 October to 8 November at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center.

First step towards Los Angeles 2028

The championships are the first of 10 qualifying events in the weightlifting programme for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The qualification system requires athletes seeking Olympic places to record eligible results across designated competitions before the final Olympic qualification rankings are established.

Participation in Ningbo therefore provides an opportunity to begin the qualification process, but does not itself secure a place at the Olympics.

The IWF expects more than 500 athletes to compete at the championships, which will bring together leading weightlifters from around the world.

The competition includes eight men's and eight women's bodyweight categories.

Afghanistan's participation

The Afghan report identifies Sayed Murad as the athlete travelling with coach Abdullah Dost.

However, the IWF's published entry list records an Afghan athlete under the name SAID WILL MURAT in the men's 95kg category. The identity and spelling have not been independently reconciled with the Afghan announcement.

The published entry list also includes other Afghan competitors, so the announcement of Murad's participation should not be taken as confirmation that Afghanistan has entered only one athlete.

The Afghan report does not specify Murad's competition time or a targeted result.

For Afghanistan's weightlifting programme, the championships offer international competition experience at the opening stage of the qualification cycle for Los Angeles 2028.
