Asian Cup 2027 Schedule Confirmed as Afghanistan Miss Out on Another Finals
The Asian Football Confederation has finalised the schedule for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, but Afghanistan will not be among the 24 competing national teams. Afghanistan finished bottom of its qualifying group with two points from six matches, leaving the country still waiting for its first appearance in the Asian Cup finals.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has confirmed the final match schedule for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, with Afghanistan absent from the 24-team competition after finishing bottom of its qualifying group.
The announcement on Monday, 26 October, sets out the programme for Asia's leading men's national-team football championship, beginning on 7 January and concluding on 5 February 2027.
While the continent's qualified teams prepare for the tournament, Afghanistan's national side remains outside the competition after another unsuccessful qualification campaign.
Afghanistan finish bottom of qualifying group
Afghanistan competed against Syria, Myanmar and Pakistan in Group E of the final qualifying round but finished fourth with just two points from six matches.
The team failed to record a victory during the campaign, while Syria won all six matches and qualified for the Asian Cup.
Afghanistan's final qualifying appearance ended in a 5–1 defeat to Syria on 31 March 2026.
The Afghan side had held Syria to a 1–1 draw at half-time, with Ali Reza Panahi scoring the equaliser, but conceded four goals after the break.
Five days earlier, Afghanistan had also lost 2–1 to Myanmar.
The results ended another qualification campaign without a place in the continental finals.
Afghanistan has never appeared in the final tournament of the men's AFC Asian Cup.
Saudi Arabia prepare to host Asia's leading teams
According to the AFC's finalised schedule, Saudi Arabia will open the tournament against Palestine on 7 January at the 72,000-seat King Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh.
The match is scheduled to begin at 8pm local time.
Saudi Arabia will host the competition for the first time, with 51 matches taking place across eight stadiums in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.
The group stage concludes on 20 January, followed by the Round of 16 from 22 January.
The quarter-finals are scheduled for 28 and 29 January, with the semi-finals on 1 and 2 February.
The final will be played at King Fahd Sports City Stadium on 5 February.
Another missed opportunity for Afghan football
Afghanistan's absence from the 2027 Asian Cup leaves a clear competitive gap between its national team and the sides that have secured places in the tournament.
The qualifying results also underline the challenge Afghanistan faces in converting participation in continental competition into a first appearance at the Asian Cup finals.
For Afghan football, the next task is to improve results in future qualification campaigns and compete more effectively against regional opponents.
The AFC has published the complete tournament schedule, with all kick-off times listed in Saudi Arabian local time (GMT+3).
