Substitute scores decisive winner as Arsenal defeat Corinthians in final
London | Sayer Zaland
Substitute Caitlin Foord scored an extra-time winner to hand Arsenal a dramatic victory over Corinthians in the final of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup at Arsenal Stadium.
Arsenal took the lead in the first half through Olivia Smith after a defensive error, but Corinthians responded quickly as Gabi Zanotti headed home an equaliser from a corner. The English side regained the advantage early in the second half when Lotte Wubben-Moy converted an Emily Fox cross.
Despite Arsenal’s dominance, missed chances proved costly as Corinthians were awarded a late penalty following a VAR review, which Vic Albuquerque converted to force extra time.
The match was decided in the 104th minute when Frida Maanum launched a counter-attack and found Foord, who finished decisively to secure the trophy for Arsenal.
Earlier in the day, Gotham FC claimed third place with a 4–0 win over ASFAR at the same venue.
