Coco Gauff advanced to the third round of the US Open with a 6–4, 7–6(5) victory over Spain’s Paula Badosa at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The world No. 4 completed the second-round win in just under two hours on Thursday night, according to the tournament’s official report.

Gauff took the opening set before Badosa produced a stronger challenge in the second. The players exchanged breaks as the Spaniard forced a tiebreak, but Gauff held her nerve to close the match in straight sets.

The result carried added significance for the 22-year-old American, who had lost five of her previous eight meetings with Badosa. Those defeats included their two most recent encounters, at the 2025 Australian Open and in Berlin earlier this season.

Gauff won the US Open in 2023 and added the French Open title in 2025. She is seeking her third Grand Slam singles championship and a second trophy in New York.

Her next opponent will be another Spanish player, Cristina Bucsa, in the third round.

Badosa, a former world No. 2, had returned to the tournament after missing the 2025 edition because of a back injury. She tested Gauff from the baseline but could not convert the pressure into a deciding set.
