Afghan Kurash athlete Javid Johari is set to represent Afghanistan at the international President of Uzbekistan Prize Kurash tournament, which will be held in Paris, France.
The annual competition has been staged in the French capital since 2022 and features contests in the 90kg and open weight categories, attracting competitors from around the world.
Last year, the late Ismail Kakar won the silver medal in the 90kg division, marking one of Afghanistan’s notable achievements in the international Kurash arena.
This year’s tournament begins on July 17 and runs through July 19, with athletes from more than 20 countries expected to compete.
Johari’s participation offers Afghanistan another opportunity to compete on the international stage as the country seeks to build on its recent successes in Kurash competitions.
Kurash is a traditional belt-wrestling martial art originating from Central Asia and is governed internationally by the International Kurash Association. Afghanistan has steadily expanded its presence in the sport, with its athletes regularly participating in regional and international competitions. The President of Uzbekistan Prize tournament is one of the prominent annual events on the international Kurash calendar, bringing together elite competitors from across the world.
