The Director General of Afghanistan’s General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, Ahmadullah Wasiq, visited an ongoing taekwondo selection tournament in Helmand Province. The two-day event features 80 athletes competing for places on the province’s representative team.

Ahmadullah Wasiq, Director General of the General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, visited the ongoing taekwondo selection tournament in Helmand Province as part of his official visit to the region.

The competition has brought together 80 athletes from five taekwondo clubs across the province, with participants competing for places on Helmand’s provincial representative team.

The visit was attended by Technical and Professional Deputy Hafiz Ahmad Jan Zadran, Afghanistan Football Federation President Mohammad Yousuf Kargar, Director of Olympic Affairs Dad Mohammad Payenda Akhtari, officials from the Helmand Directorate of Sports, athletes, and taekwondo enthusiasts.

During the event, Wasiq expressed appreciation for the athletes’ performances and assured participants that the sports administration would consider their requests and continue to support the sport’s development.

The selection tournament will run for two days, after which 10 athletes will be chosen to represent Helmand in the provincial taekwondo team.

Provincial selection tournaments play a key role in Afghanistan’s athlete development system, allowing sports federations and local authorities to identify talented competitors for representative teams. Taekwondo is among the country’s growing combat sports, with regular regional competitions contributing to talent identification and development.
