The 17th edition of the Gul-e-Sorkh Taekwondo Tournament concluded in Mazar-e-Sharif with Parwan province securing the overall team title, in a competition held to commemorate Afghanistan’s first Olympic medal won by Rohullah Nikpai.

Teams from across the country participated in the event, reflecting continued engagement in national-level competitions despite ongoing constraints facing the sports sector. In the final standings, Parwan claimed first place with 16 points, followed by Jawzjan with 14 points. Balkh finished third with 10 points, while Samangan and Takhar secured fourth and fifth positions with 9 and 7 points respectively.

Beyond competition, the tournament served as a symbolic reminder of Afghanistan’s historic participation in international sport, particularly the Olympic успех achieved by Nikpai. Such commemorative events highlight efforts to preserve national sporting identity at a time when institutional limitations and resource challenges continue to affect the development of athletics across the country.

Rohullah Nikpai made history by winning Afghanistan’s first Olympic medal in taekwondo at the 2008 Beijing Games, a milestone that continues to influence grassroots and elite-level sports initiatives nationwide.
