Weather has emerged as a fresh variable ahead of Afghanistan’s opening T20I against India on Sunday, with forecasts indicating a substantial possibility of rain in New Delhi during the match window.
The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. India time at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Forecast information reported ahead of the match put the chance of precipitation on Sunday at about 64 percent, raising the possibility of interruptions or a shortened contest.
For Afghanistan, any reduction in overs could materially change the tactical balance. Their established spin options — including Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb Ur Rahman — are a major part of the side’s strength, while a shortened match can increase the influence of individual batting bursts and leave less time for bowling attacks to recover from an expensive over.
The weather question comes on top of an unusual setting. Afghanistan are the designated hosts for the three-match series even though all three fixtures are being played in New Delhi, making India the official visiting side on home soil.
Afghanistan are still looking for their first T20I victory over India. Sunday’s opener therefore carries competitive significance beyond the unusual hosting arrangement, particularly as Ibrahim Zadran’s side tests itself against a strong Indian squad.
The fixture is expected to proceed as scheduled. Earlier concerns around security and traffic linked to the BRICS Summit were addressed by local cricket authorities, while Delhi Traffic Police have announced matchday restrictions around the stadium from 2:00 p.m.
The second and third T20Is are scheduled for September 15 and 17 at the same venue.
