KABUL, Afghanistan — Zakaria Sherzad took first place in a 120-player snooker tournament in Kabul’s Dasht-e Barchi district, with Wais Raufi finishing runner-up, Afghanistan’s General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports said on Wednesday.

The National Snooker Federation staged the competition over three days, bringing together players from 30 clubs across the city. GDPES said Sherzad and Raufi received cash awards after securing the top two places.

The field was larger than at another Kabul competition reported by GDPES on September 15, when 90 players from the same number of clubs competed at Golden Ball Club. The federation said at the time that it holds city competitions twice each month to give players regular competition and identify new talent.

The latest field therefore added 30 players, an increase of one-third, while the number of participating clubs remained at 30.
