Qatar has provided 15 buses and security equipment to Senegal to support preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, extending its sporting cooperation to the first Olympic event to be staged on African soil.

The assistance draws on Qatar's experience of hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup and adds a practical dimension to sporting cooperation between the two countries.

The contribution was handed over at Keur Ayo, the headquarters of the Dakar 2026 Organising Committee, in the presence of Qatari diplomats and Senegalese sports officials.

Among those attending were His Excellency Youssef Shaban Ibrahim Al Sada, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Senegal; Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, President of the Dakar 2026 Organising Committee; and Modou Bara Gaye, Director General of Senegal's public transport operator, Dakar Dem Dikk.

The Games, scheduled from 31 October to 13 November, are expected to bring approximately 2,700 young athletes to Senegal.

Qatar's World Cup experience behind the assistance

The handover forms part of Qatar's efforts to share resources and experience acquired through hosting major sporting events, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Representatives of Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy attended the ceremony alongside officials responsible for preparing the Youth Olympic Games.

The buses and security equipment have been provided to support the organising committee's transport, security and operational preparations. Their precise deployment during the Games has not been publicly detailed.

The contribution also reflects Qatar's continued cooperation with countries preparing to host major international sporting events.

Ambassador highlights diplomatic ties

His Excellency Youssef Shaban Ibrahim Al Sada described the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games as a historic occasion for African sport.

"Qatar and Senegal have a strong and long-standing relationship," the Ambassador said, welcoming the opportunity to support Senegal's preparations.

H.E. Al Sada also emphasised the value of sharing expertise gained through hosting international sporting events and the role of sport in strengthening cooperation between nations.

Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, President of the Dakar 2026 Organising Committee, welcomed the contribution and highlighted the wider cooperation between Senegal and Qatar.

Practical support for a historic event

For Senegal, the assistance comes during the final preparations for an Olympic event of particular significance to Africa.

Competitions and associated activities will take place across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, requiring extensive coordination of transport, security and event operations.

Senegal's public transport operator, Dakar Dem Dikk, has separately announced plans to mobilise 184 buses across 12 designated Games routes. Qatar's contribution adds to the resources available for the event, although the allocation of the donated vehicles has not been specified.

For Qatar, the assistance is another example of its experience as a major sporting host being shared through international partnerships.

The handover gives that cooperation a practical form ahead of the opening of Africa's first Youth Olympic Games.
