KABUL, July 7, 2019 – The Afghanistan Sports Journalists Federation (ASJF) in collaboration with AwA societal foundation celebrated this year’s World Sports Journalists Day with a big ceremony that had the Herat Governor and local authorities in attendance. ASJF President Sayer Zaland and members of the association were also joined by representatives of sports federations to mark the Day.

In his opening remark, Zaland congratulated all sports Journalists around the country while expressing the importance of unity and the power of sports media. He also spoke about fake news, especially on social media, and advised journalists to be careful with non-sourced news.

Zaland expressed delight at having a large community of AIPS members in the country and is looking forward to training more journalists in the country. He asked that sports federations and government organizations to give access to sports media and release information to all reporters on time. ASJF awarded 20 journalists from the host province with ASJF shields and wished them best of luck for their future.

The Afghanistan Olympic Committee, Afghanistan Taekwondo Federation and ASJF provincial associations in Khost, Kandahar and Helmand provinces also celebrated the day

Sayer Zaland is an Afghan sports journalist and media professional, Founder of the Afghanistan Sports Journalists Federation (ASJF). Since 2014, he has worked to strengthen independent media in Afghanistan, representing over 100 members nationwide. He continues to advocate for free press, inclusivity, and international cooperation for Afghan journalists.
