Afghanistan opened their ODI tri-series campaign with a commanding 158-run victory over Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi on Monday, October 19, after a century from Sediqullah Atal and a four-wicket performance from Rashid Khan.
Afghanistan were bowled out for 294 before their bowling attack dismissed Zimbabwe for 136, turning a competitive first-innings total into a comprehensive victory.
Atal was named Player of the Match for his innings of 102 from 110 deliveries, featuring eight fours and one six. It was his third century in one-day international cricket.
His performance came alongside an impressive innings from Ibrahim Zadran, who scored 90 from 96 balls, including nine fours and two sixes.
The pair shared a 140-run second-wicket partnership that established the foundation of Afghanistan's innings after the early dismissal of Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
Zadran reached his half-century in the 16th over and continued to attack Zimbabwe's bowlers before falling to Brad Evans for 90.
Atal maintained his concentration through the middle overs, adding a further 42 runs with Hashmatullah Shahidi.
He completed his century in the 44th over before being dismissed by Sikandar Raza in the following over.
Despite the strong partnership, Afghanistan could not maintain their momentum in the closing stages.
Zimbabwe's bowlers recovered to take five wickets in the final five overs, during which Afghanistan added only 34 runs.
Ernest Masuku finished with 3 for 44 and Brad Evans took 3 for 47, while Blessing Muzarabani claimed two wickets.
Afghanistan's innings ended at 294 all out, leaving Zimbabwe a target of 295.
Zimbabwe's reply quickly came under pressure as Fazalhaq Farooqi took two early wickets with the new ball.
Azmatullah Omarzai maintained the pressure from the other end before Afghanistan's spin bowlers took control of the middle overs.
Rashid Khan delivered the decisive spell, claiming four wickets and preventing Zimbabwe from establishing a substantial partnership.
Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl offered resistance, but the rest of Zimbabwe's batting lineup struggled against Afghanistan's varied attack.
Zimbabwe were eventually dismissed for 136, giving Afghanistan victory by 158 runs.
According to the match commentary, the result was Afghanistan's fourth-largest ODI victory by runs.
Atal's Player of the Match award recognised the innings that laid the foundation for Afghanistan's total, while the bowling attack ensured the team began its tri-series campaign with a convincing victory.
