Diane Parry won her first WTA singles title by defeating Elise Mertens 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in the Monterrey Open final. The Frenchwoman recovered after losing the second set without a game and held off a late challenge from the second seed in the decider.

Diane Parry secured the first WTA singles title of her career on Saturday, beating Belgium’s Elise Mertens in three sets at the WTA 500 tournament in Monterrey.
The 23-year-old Frenchwoman completed the 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and 31 minutes, according to the official WTA result.
Parry made the stronger start and moved 4-1 ahead in the opening set. Mertens recovered to level at 4-4, but Parry held serve and then broke the Belgian to take the set.
The match changed sharply in the second set. Mertens, the No. 2 seed, broke three times and won six consecutive games. Parry took a medical timeout while trailing 5-0 before returning to complete the set.
Parry regained control in the decider, saving two break points in her opening service game and two more on the way to a 3-0 advantage. She extended the lead to 5-1 before Mertens won two straight games, but Parry served out the contest at her second opportunity.
“I came here with almost nothing,” Parry said during the presentation, describing the title run as a “crazy week,” according to the WTA’s tournament report.
The victory was Parry’s third over a seeded opponent in five matches in Monterrey and came in her first Tour-level singles final. It also completed her final tournament before the US Open, where she is scheduled to face Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in the first round on Monday, Reuters reported.
