Mohammad Gul Mohammadi secured a bronze medal for Afghanistan in the poomsae division of the eighth World Taekwondo President’s Cup Asian Region.
The competition was held in Lahore, Pakistan, and brought together athletes from more than 40 countries, according to Afghan media reports and the country’s sports authorities.
Mohammadi competed against a Pakistani representative on his route to the podium. Images released by Afghanistan’s General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports show the Afghan athlete standing in third place during the medal ceremony.
Afghanistan entered athletes in both poomsae, the discipline based on prescribed sequences of movements, and kyorugi, the sparring discipline. Bakhtar News Agency identified Mohammadi among the country’s poomsae representatives.
Some secondary coverage described Mohammadi’s medal as a kyorugi result. ASJFNEWS has identified the event as poomsae because that classification is supported by the Afghan sports directorate, TOLOnews and Bakhtar’s competition report.
The bronze was Afghanistan’s only reported medal at the event. Other members of the delegation competed in the two disciplines, while Afghan coaches, assistants and referees also attended the tournament.
