The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup began in Berlin on Friday, bringing together 16 teams for 10 days of competition in the German capital.
The group stage divides the field into four groups of four. Hosts Germany are joined by Japan, Spain and Mali in Group A, while Hungary, Korea, Nigeria and France make up Group B.
Defending champions the United States are in Group D with Czechia, Italy and China. Group C contains Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico and Türkiye.
Each team will play three group matches. The winner of each group advances directly to the quarterfinals, while the second- and third-placed teams enter a qualification round. Teams finishing fourth are eliminated.
The qualification games are scheduled for September 8, followed by the quarterfinals on September 10 and semifinals on September 12. The bronze-medal game and final will be played on September 13.
Matches are being staged at Berlin Arena and Max-Schmeling-Halle. The tournament is the first Women’s World Cup to feature 16 teams, expanding the field from the 12 that competed in 2022.
The United States enters the competition seeking a fifth consecutive title after winning the previous four editions.
