Youth Participation Highlighted Amid Limited Sporting Opportunities

Mazar-e-Sharif | By Sara Amiri

A wushu tournament involving athletes from 12 provinces was held in Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh province, under the cooperation of the provincial Department of Physical Education and Sports and the Wushu Federation’s local representation.

The competition brought together around 100 athletes competing across junior, youth, and senior age categories. Balkh secured first place, followed by Bamiyan in second and Baghlan in third.

Officials stated that the primary objective of the event was to encourage youth participation in sports, as organized athletic activities remain limited in many parts of the country. The tournament lasted for one day.

In recent years, provincial-level competitions have become one of the few consistent platforms for Afghan athletes to remain active, as broader structural and institutional challenges continue to affect the development of sports nationwide.
