A one-day Zurkhaneh sports and traditional wrestling championship featuring 160 athletes has begun in Kabul under the name of the Abdul Wali Ayoubi Cup.

The Abdul Wali Ayoubi Cup, featuring Zurkhaneh sports and traditional wrestling, began in Kabul on Thursday with 160 athletes taking part.

The competition was organized by the national federation in cooperation with the Kabul Physical Education and Sports Directorate.

Athletes from children, cadet, youth and senior age categories are competing in different weight divisions during the one-day championship.

The participants will compete in individual fights, with 80 top athletes expected to be identified at the conclusion of the event.

Organizers said the championship is being held to honor the memory of Afghan Zurkhaneh wrestling champion Abdul Wali Ayoubi, encourage young people to participate in sports and identify talented athletes.


Zurkhaneh sports and traditional wrestling have longstanding roots in the region. The Kabul championship provides athletes from different age groups with an opportunity to compete and demonstrate their abilities.
